THE PRINCESS WORLD, EL LIBERANTO DEL FAUNO

The Oscar winning Spanish movie, El Liberanto Del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) is highly imaginative, creative and an artistic piece. It is more like the Alice in the wonderland for grown-ups. It is the mixture of horrors of the real and fantasy world, both at the same time. It can easily lead the viewers to a spellbinding experience which they can never forget.  The story revolves around a little girl, Ofelia, who actually lives in her imaginary world which is full of nightmarish creatures. She travels to live with her mother’s new husband, the fascist captain Vidal, in a rural area of Spain.

The movie perfectly portrays the era after Civil War, when fascism was on its peak. Vidal is engaged ruthlessly in finishing the guerilla group, hidden in the nearby forest. His head housemaid and a doctor are secretly helping the guerilla group and Ofelia (knows the reality of Vidal) draws her attention to the fairytale imagination so that she can ignore the violent behavior of Vidal.

Ofelia follows a locust-fairy and finds an ancient labyrinth which is outside the border. She meets a forest spirit Pan, who gives her three tasks to fulfill involving a giant greedy toad, the terrifying pale man (who holds his eyes in the palms of his hands) and the shedding of innocent blood so she can rightfully claim the throne, being the re-incarnation of an ancient princess. On every step there is a breathtaking suspense and you can never guess about what will happen next? The adventures of Ofelia which she faces with bravery and courage are really very horrifying but it catches your attention throughout the movie.

Pan’s Labyrinth has terror, astonishment, disgust, fiction, wonder, shock, and hope. The awe-inspiring makeup, appearances or sketching of characters is just great. It is highly recommendable to both young and old who likes fantasy.
